Robert Harper Clarkson papers, 1845-1880.

These private letters and official papers are chiefly addressed to Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham of Maryland. They begin with Clarkson's testimonials for orders, 1845-1848, his studies and teaching position at the College of St. James, Hagerstown, Md., 1845-1849, and his rectorate of St. James' Church, Chicago, Ill., 1849-1865. References to ecclesiastical events and issues in the Diocese of Illinois are followed by Clarkson's election as Bishop of Nebraska, 1865, and clerical matters concerning that diocese. Among subjects mentioned are missions to the Indians; education, including circulars about Brownell Hall, Neb.; and work of the Episcopal Freedmans' Commission.
